“It’s a voluntary agreement, it depends on us”
At the “Co-producing sustainable cities?” conference organised by the Heinrich Böll foundation in September 2016, we talked to Günter Meinert of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ GmbH). We asked him about his hopes for the Quito conference, the final text of the New Urban Agenda, and who will be responsible for its implementation.

Programme Manager at German Development Cooperation (GIZ)
Guenter Meinert has extensive work experience in decentralization, local governance and urban development in developing countries. He is Programme Manager atheadquarter, advising the German Ministry of Cooperation on its urban development policies. In 2008, he was appointed honorary professor for urban management at the Berlin Institute of Technology. He began his professional career as researcher at the University of Kaiserslautern. From 2007 until 2011 he was seconded as a Senior Urban Specialist to the Secretariat of the "Cities Alliance – Cities without Slums", a global program hosted by the World Bank.
