About Shadia Touqan

Dr. Shadia Yousef Touqan is an architect and urban planner with extensive experience in UK and the Middle East. She holds a B.Sc. in Architecture, an M.A. in Urban Design and a PhD in Urban Planning and Development. She has specialised in architectural preservation and revitalization of historic cities and housing renewal. She is an international expert on issues related to “Post Trauma and Post Conflict” reconstruction of historic sites and cities. Dr Touqan has been the Director of ARC-WH (UNESCO Category 2 Centre) since January 2017. She has led and directed Welfare Association’s comprehensive Old City of Jerusalem Revitalization Pogramme (1997-2014), winning the Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2004. She has published several papers and articles on cultural heritage preservation, housing renewal and revitalization of historic cities.

Rebuilding cultural sites that were destroyed in armed conflict needs to be an essential part of urban reconstruction policies. However, as Shadia Touqan argues, rebuilding these sites cannot be addressed in isolation from what should be any policy's priority: protecting the lives of the people who live there.
