About Marty Chen

Marty Chen is the International Coordinator of WIEGO, a Lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Affiliated Professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design. An experienced development practitioner and scholar, her areas of specialization are employment, gender, and poverty with a focus on the working poor in the informal economy. Before joining Harvard in 1987, she had two decades of resident experience in Bangladesh working with BRAC (now the world's largest non-governmental organization) and in India, where she served as field representative of Oxfam America for India and Bangladesh.

Yet local governments often do nothing to protect these workers and instead they are frequently subject to discrimination. Marty Chen, Sally Roever and Caroline Skinner from the WIEGO Network show ways in which they can organize to claim their rights and be better included in urban policy processes.
