About Fernando Murillo

Dr. Fernando Murillo’s work spans urban planning, housing, slum upgrading and infrastructure with governments and UN agencies with a focus on displaced communities and refugees. He worked with UN Habitat, UNDP, UNRWA and UNHCR in the Palestinian territories, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Zambia and Rwanda, carrying out urban and regional planning, shelter strategies and social housing using friendly technologies. He is the author of the background paper for the IOM World Migration Report 2015 “Migration and Urbanization Path: Reshaping the Human Geography of Latin America and the Caribbean”. As research program director at the University of Buenos Aires he developed multiple participatory territorial planning tools applied in several Latin American countries to help local governments and communities to work out an integrated and inclusive urbanisation strategy with a focus on progressive human rights.
