About Douglas Ragan and Raphael Obonyo and Rolf Wichmann

Douglas Ragan has worked in youth development at the local, national and international level for the past 30 years. Currently he is the Chief of the Youth and Livelihoods Unit for UN-Habitat, managing UN-Habitat's global youth empowerment programme which has engaged over 350,000 youth in over 70 developing countries. Doug has authored, co-authored, and edited 17 research and policy publications on urban youth issues, the most recent being the Global Youth-Led Development series, representing some of the first research done on youth-led agencies in the developing world. Doug holds a Bachelor's Degree in Latin American Studies and a Master's Degree in Management for Non-Profits. Raphael Obonyo is an award-winning youth advocate at national, regional, and international levels. He is the co-founder of the Youth Congress, a youth-led organisation in Kenya, and has been named one of 100 most influential young Kenyans (2019) and 100 most influential young Africans (2018). He has authored and co-authored numerous books, including "Conversations about the Youth in Kenya". Rolf Wichmann is an international development consultant with more than 25 years of experience at the United Nations in urban policy development. Born in Germany and educated in the United States, he lives and works in Nairobi, Kenya.

An oft mentioned phrase in development parlance is “think globally, act locally”. Yet, when the change we seek is improved livelihoods globally, is local action enough? Doug Ragan, Rolf Wichmann, and Raphael Obonyo claim that local action is critical yet can’t be done in isolation of national and international realities.
