About Joseph Mustapha Macarthy

Dr. Joseph Mustapha Macarthy is an innovative urban planner and a well-established scholar in urban development with backgrounds in urban management, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk and resilience with specific expertise in urban Sierra Leone. He also lectures in the Institute of Geography and Development Studies at Njala University in Sierra Leone. He has worked in various capacities on urban development in Sierra Leone including, as the lead local consultant in the design of a Structure Plan for Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown. Joseph’s research interest centers mainly on urban development, vulnerability and resilience, mobility, public health, housing and informal settlements.
