Cities are irrefutably linked to human history and development. Be it innovation, political and cultural progress or economic development, it all happens predominantly in cities. With today’s world becoming increasingly urban, we will not be able to achieve the ambitious global goals on sustainable development of the 2030 Agenda or the Paris Agreement without cities. The unprecedented pace of urbanisation makes action ever more urgent. We thus need to seize the chances that cities offer now – we need to shape urban development in a sustainable and people-centred way – because our future depends on them.
